Beyond Water: A new bloom in Bhimasar

Blue Water, Green Growth, and Golden Opportunities: The Holistic Revival of a Kutch Community

In recent years, the village of Washere stood at a critical crossroads. Despite its close-knit community and seasonal streams, the landscape was changing for the worse. Groundwater levels plummeted, rainfall became a gamble, and aggressive soil erosion scarred once-fertile farmlands. This was not merely an environmental issue; it was a socio-economic crisis. Families watched their livelihoods wither as the rural economy, which thrives on water, faced an uncertain future.

Bhimasar: A Partnership for Sustainability | Anarde Foundation, GWC & Cargill

In the arid heart of Kutch, Gujarat, where water has long been a precious and elusive commodity, a quiet revolution is taking place. This is the inspiring story of Bhimasar—a vibrant community that, through a powerful collaboration between the Anarde Foundation, GWC, and Cargill, has successfully turned a longstanding narrative of scarcity into one of lasting sustainability. From 2022 to 2025, this comprehensive partnership didn’t just provide temporary relief; it built a robust foundation for a resilient, self-sufficient, and truly thriving future.

Afforestation

Restoring the Blue and Green Wealth

The project restored Bhimasar’s “blue” and “green” assets by implementing innovative groundwater recharge and desilting local ponds. This expanded water storage by 67,000 cubic meters, creating a vital buffer against drought. Additionally, planting over 4,200 trees has successfully revived local biodiversity and secured the community’s natural resources.

Empowering the Heart of the Community

Beyond physical infrastructure, the project focused on empowering women by activating 103 Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These groups serve as financial and social pillars, transforming village women into confident leaders and entrepreneurs. By providing the tools to manage resources, the initiative has unlocked genuine economic independence and social dignity for families across the community.

Livelihoods and Lasting Ownership

Economic stability was reinforced as 100+ families adopted modern, sustainable farming to secure food and income. By establishing local committees, the project transitioned leadership to the villagers, ensuring the community holds the reins of its own progress.
Today, Bhimasar serves as a blueprint for rural development, proving that when global resources and corporate responsibility align with local wisdom, a resilient and shared future is possible.
